The Combustion Engine - Part 1
We call them cars, a primary mode of transport for many of us to commute. To children, they are huge chunks of metal that vroom around the streets! So how do they vroom around and who is pushing them from point A to B. The magic occurs under the hood in the form of a combustion engine (unless it's an electric car), so how do they work?
The combustion engine has several pistons inside and is what creates the energy that drives the car. There are four steps to how the pistons generate power:
1. Intake Stroke: Air and fuel enter the small chamber
2. Compression Stroke: Piston drops down and compresses the air and fuel mixture
3. Power Stroke: Piston returns to the top of the chamber and a spark occurs to ignite the fuel-air mixture thus giving off hot gas which creates the power
4. Exhaust Stroke: The Piston goes back to its original position letting in gas. The process is ready to start again
Here is a video for you and the littles ones to watch on how a combustion engines functions
